Susan and John Strawbridge

Artists in Nature

About Susan

Born on Long Island, Susan Strawbridge is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City and received her Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. She holds a signature membership in the Florida Watercolor Society and is represented by the Florida Artists Gallery in Floral City. Susan teaches classes in watercolour at the gallery.

"I've been drawing and painting as long as I can remember. After exploring other media like oils and pastels, watercolour has always been my passion. There is something about the luminosity of this medium that allows light and color to be transmitted across the paint film. When I go out with my sketchpad and camera, I look for subjects in nature that the light enhances. Then I come home and try to translate that quality in paint."

About John

Born in Pennsylvania and educated in architectural design, John Strawbridge has labored for many years in exhibits planning for museums and nature centers. Most of these efforts have been in the U.S., but he has worked also in Tanzania, Bonaire, and Belize. Projects have included four regional museums, one zoological park, five public parks or conservation areas, and three nature centers.

Since moving to Florida in 2005, John has concentrated on the illustration of animals and plants, a lifelong interest. His central purpose is to increase awareness and appreciation of the wonders of life on our planet. Many of his drawings and paintings have been used in interpretive materials for natural science institutions, and others have been acquired by private collectors.
